Apricot is one of those classic garden trees that brings joy long before the fruit appears. Prunus armeniaca is well known to home gardeners and orchard growers alike for its early spring blossom and sweet, velvety fruit in early to mid-summer.
This apricot tree is grown as a semi dwarf fruit tree, meaning it remains more compact and manageable than traditional full-sized apricot trees. The reduced size is achieved through grafting onto a slow-growing rootstock, a technique widely used in professional orchards to control tree height while encouraging earlier and more reliable fruit production. The result is a tree that is easier to prune, protect, and harvest while still producing generous yields.
In early spring, apricot trees are often among the first to bloom. Delicate white to pale pink flowers open before the leaves, attracting early pollinators and marking the true beginning of the gardening season.
Once established, the tree forms a rounded canopy with bright green foliage. The fruits are smooth, golden-orange drupes with a warm, sweet flavour. They are excellent eaten fresh from the tree, and equally suitable for drying, baking, jams, or preserves.
For best results, plant in a sunny, well-drained position with good air circulation. Because apricots flower early, the blossoms can be sensitive to late spring frosts. A sheltered location, such as near a south-facing wall, can offer additional protection during colder nights.
Apricots are generally self-fertile, meaning they are capable of producing fruit without requiring a second tree nearby, although having another apricot tree in the area may help improve overall yields.
As with all our fruit trees, we select varieties with winter hardiness in mind, ensuring suitability for reliable outdoor cultivation in our climate.
With a sunny position, well-prepared soil, and a little patience, apricot rewards us with one of the most satisfying stone fruits we can harvest from our own garden.
All trees are sold and delivered as 1 year old trees in jute bags filled with rich Dutch soil.
